I was asked this question this morning..
"Does it bother you when people refer to that book as the 'word of God'?"
My response was perfectly vague and noncommittal. And I do not think that my response should've been vague and noncommittal. I think it is important that I start to develop an articulation and defense for what I believe. And I think it needs to begin very soon (possibly waiting until the semester and its papers are finished).
So, turning the question back to you...
Does it bother you when people refer to the Bible as the "word of God"?

Yes if they mean God inspired more than the innocent laughter of a little child is God inspired. If they mean the literal word of God, dictated, once more yes, it bothers me.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, but I am not sure I could put a finger on exactly why. I still refer to it and usually regard it as the word of God (though like Bombadil I do not think it was dictated. Wesleyans don't believe that either).
ReplyDeleteWhat is it exactly about that statement that bothers you?
ReplyDeleteAnything that rightly allows the Truth of God to be discovered could be said to be the word of God. So, not only the bible, but maybe even your blog, when appropriate, can be said to be the word of God.
